Make Your Standardized Testing Prep Fun

Make Your Standardized Testing Prep Fun Preparing for Standardized Testing While Having Fun Many students think preparing for standardized testing must be rote and boring, when in reality it is a great opportunity to have fun while mastering new knowledge and skills. Finding ways to infuse fun into study sessions will boost students' confidence and give them something to look forward to as the testing day draws near. Making it fun shouldn't be difficult. Instead, find ways to integrate your child's interests and strengths into these study sessions. Find a friendMany students work well with peers and learn more within a study group. If your child is preparing for a standardized test, considerbuilding peer based study sessions into the preparation calendar. Once aweek your child could join a study group with others who are preparing forthe same exam. This peer interaction can help build confidence and providea welcome change of pace from the typical solo study session. CelebratestrengthsAt times, your child may feel overwhelmed by standardized testingpreparation. A great way to keep the studying fun and stress free is tocelebrate your child's achievements and strengths. Build incentives intothe study schedule for the amount of material mastered or when your child becomes proficient with a difficult skill or concept. Some childrenrespond well to goal setting with a tangible incentive at the end of a setperiod of time. For example, at the end of a successful week of studying for the ACT your child may earn a trip to the movies with a friend or theability to opt out of a weekly chore. Make agame out of itStudying for a standardized test doesn't have to be boring. There are many great educational games you can play with your child while preparingfor exam day. CardSharksIf your child likes playing card games you can put a fun diversion togood use. Use sticky notes to attach test prep strategies or contentspecific information to the cards. During the next study break ask yourchild to play the game, solitaire is a good choice, and remove the sticky notes as they appear on the cards. At the end of the game collect the sticky notes and review the each before placing them back on the cards for a future study break. Online vocabulary gamesThere are many great online or mobile app vocabulary games that studentscan use to study for a standardized test. These games boost your child'sunderstanding of challenging vocabulary over time using an engaging andinteractive platform. Many of them allow your child to earn badges or play games against other users for additional challenges. Track the TrainMath problems involving two trains leaving the station are quintessential on standardized tests. They assess a student's algebraicproficiency and the ability to accurately solve a problem. Spice up studying for these problems using a United States map and the cities yourchild has already visited. The distance formula,d = r*t (distance =rate * time), won't seem nearly as tedious when it involves familiarplaces and travels. Create the perfect study spaceHaving a dedicated space to study often helps students focus on thecontent and avoid being distracted by the surroundings or other familymembers. Help your child create the perfect study space and invest in funtouches that your child will enjoy. Allow your child to decorate the space or pick out desk accessories that add a touch of whimsy to the weeklystudy schedule.

Many students are already pretty tired at this point in the year and start to struggle just when they need a ton of extra concentration. However, students at this age have a ton of responsibility in front of them and, if they are in the college prep years, some of these things will make a big difference in their future education. One of the best ways to combat fatigue is simply to get an adequate amount of sleep. Its tempting to stay up late to study and then try and catch up on sleep during the weekend but, students at this age need a full night’s sleep every night. 2.   Lack of balance Another thing that can make it difficult to be successful spring semester is a lack of balance. Some students work too hard and dont get enough rest while other students have too much fun and dont complete enough work. Its hard to find that ideal balance between work and life, but its an important thing to strive towards for a person of any age, especially a high school student. When a routine is to balance students, tend to be able to complete things in less time and be able to study more efficiently. 3.   Exams There are a ton of exams during the spring semester and the amount of time required to study can cause a lot of stress for a high school student. Although these exams cant be avoided altogether, students can spread out their exams, so theyre not overwhelmed. For instance, they could take the SAT one month and AP exams the next (Waiting For College Acceptance Letters: 5 Things to Research). 4.   Senioritis Senioritis is another major cause of difficulties for students at this age. Senioritis doesnt just apply to graduating seniors, but rather we start to see symptoms in students as young as freshman year. Students get tired and want to do things that are more fun and require less responsibility. This is a pretty normal reaction to school at this point in the year, but its important that students hang in there and complete assignments promptly through the end of the term. 5.   Concentration issues Many students start to have trouble concentrating at this point in the year for any number of reasons. It might be due to fatigue or because they’re overwhelmed, or it might be because theyre starting to get bored of repetitive material. One way students can combat this lack of concentration is to reevaluate their study space and make sure they have as few distractions as possible so they can focus in on what they need to get done. If students are studying with friends, they might need to start studying solo for a while, or they may need the help of an at-home tutor to help them get re-organized so they can be successful for the rest of the term. She’s also studying above grade level in the Kumon Reading Program, and can say she has already analyzed pieces of literature, such as Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird before even entering middle school. Having been enrolled in Kumon for five years, Suhani is experiencing the true benefits of the Kumon Method, especially self-learning. “So far, I can say that becoming a self-learner has been one of the most beneficial takeaways,” said Suhani. “I sometimes notice my peers in school struggling with certain concepts, while I am able to figure out challenging problems on my own.” Gaining her independence has also carried over into improving her focus and discipline, which she applies in her extracurricular activities. Her discipline and focus will help her achieve her future aspiration of becoming a surgeon one day. Suhani is an accomplished pianist and is proud to say that she has passed the Yamaha ABRSM Grade 1 Exam. What Does it Take to Become a Session Musician

What Does it Take to Become a Session Musician Suzy S. Want to earn money playing and performing music? Set yourself up on the path to success with these career tips from Corona, CA music teacher  Milton J. Many aspiring musicians dream of being discovered and becoming the next best superstar. However, many others must also face the music that there is a certain amount of luck and chance in getting that seven-figure record deal. In lieu of sitting, waiting, and wishing for that big break, creating smaller breaks for yourself could make that eventual discovery much easier for AR representatives and record executives, not to mention creating a source of income for yourself in the industry you love. Some of your interests may include songwriting, producing, band leading, or being a creative manager of a music project. These roles often define the dynamics of a band or production, and can help you achieve your eventual goal of sustained financial gains and fame. They also own the most profitable portions of the music industry copyrighted songs and publishing and performance royalties. Yes, that means the person who writes the lyrics and the melodies can potentially earn just as much or more than the artist who sings and performs it. If you have an interest in instrumental or supportive work in a band as opposed to or in conjunction with songwriting, session musicianship would be a perfect launching pad for you. Musicians who choose to engage in session musicianship work with lots of different people, which makes for a successful career by sharing technical and musical expertise with many walks of life in the music industry. In order to do this successfully, you need to build yourself a good reputation and network constantly to create as many connections as possible. If this appeals to your twinkling piano or guitar fingers or tickles your vocal cords, here are some helpful tips on readying yourself to be a successful session musician! Be Technically Proficient Whether for recordings or live gigs, you need to be able to get it right, and fast! Sight reading or the ability to pick up songs by ear are very useful in this case (that means private music lessons with your local TakeLessons teacher are a must!). Be Stylistically Versatile Being able to play in multiple genres of music will increase your possible session gigs, which will lead to more opportunities and financial gains! Be a Diplomat Give your opinion if someone asks for it, but don’t overstep your boundaries, as you’re there to help fulfill a vision. Be Picky To begin, accepting session gigs from anyone from various genres will help to build your name and enhance your session workshop aptitude, but after a while you should focus on choosing bands that are professional and give you an element of security in terms of work, tours, earnings, and payouts or shares of future royalties. Be Flexible With Your Time and Money You have to be prepared to be away for an extended period of time at the drop of a hat if youre asked to go on tour with an artist. Also, sometimes you may have a downturn in potential session gigs, and you’ll need to be financially prudent. Prepare yourself for these possibilities with your housing, bills, and finances. Become a Multi-Instrumentalist Being able to play multiple instruments (I personally play guitar and piano in addition to vocals) gives you more opportunities to help out and fill in with various roles, which can both set you apart from other session musicians and lead to increased pay. Know Your Gear Being knowledgable about â€" as well as owning your own â€"  equipment is important. It makes everything easier if you show up ready to go with all your gear, and you know what to do with it to help provide the sound the lead artist is looking for. Know Your Rights Make sure you have clear and written-consented agreements on recordings about any royalty entitlements. Frequent a Place With a Thriving Music Scene Although the Internet surely helps to solve this problem to an extent, it’s a good idea to frequent an area where you know and work with the local music scene and/or touring acts, which could lead to more work opportunities and good honest connections. Identify With Your Music This will make your career much more fulfilling, and will show the best and most expressive side of your musicality. Isnt this what its all about? If this sounds like something you would like to pursue, then the world is truly your oyster. Time is of the essence to channel your love for music into your job!
